If you don’t know who Tall Black Guy is, you really should. He has been a mainstay on the beat scene for some time (even before to term lofi and all the modern stuff was coined). He is a true pioneer in this lane creating thoughtful albums and singles built on both samples and instrumentation.
I have always seen TBG as a continuation of funky Jazz instrumentalist of the past like Roy Ayers and company except he was obviously inspired by a more of a hiphop and electronic lane(but I digress cause that is just a guess).
This most recent release from him captures the moment we all find ourselves through music in a nice way. “Restless as we are” is a collection of instrumentals with speeches and spoken word put to them with the occasional traditional song. This effort is a 7 song offering including a few well place interlude type pieces that capture the conscious of this moment perfectly. The whole effort has the jazz meets hiphop feel that is dominant in TBG’s production and the vibe is great. This album was much needed medicine for me in these times and songs like “as the night moves”, “emerge and see” and “gimmie mine” are getting constant play in my daily mixes. Do yourself a favor and give this a listen and make a effort to discover more of TBG’s work it is well worth it. ENJOY!
